JULY 2009 - Summertime is here...we think?!

I took a field tour with Steve last night and it is evident that we need some sunshine and heat - athough everything is looking healthy and is growing, the sun would really get thing growing!!!

  • Unfortunately the strawberries are done for this early season.  This is not something that is merely affecting our farm, but rather all farms in Southern Ontario.  Farmers are speculating that a combination of poor weather last fall and this spring has caused the stawberry plants to produce only half of what they normally would.  But don't despair!  Steve has late blooming strawberries (and personally I think that they are the sweetest berries!), and they are doing quite well right now!!
  • Conversely the potatoes this year are doing amazingly well - the weather we've been experiencing is perfect for potatoes and Steve said he hasn't seen such a bumper crop in at least 3 years!!
  • The second plantings of many of the fall vegetables has been done.
  • The weeds are getting quite plentiful and Steve and the guys are undertaking this back breaking job of pulling them to ensure the crops aren't crowded out.
  • Lisa has been hard at work at the farmers markets!  You can the Cooper's stall full of our great produce at the Uxbridge, Aurora, Newmarket, and Gravenhurst markets!!
  • The turkeys are thriving and promise to make delicious Thanksgiving additions to the summer meat share baskets!!
  • The corn maze is growing well and we are now in the process of finding someone who can fly our photographer over the field so that we can get our annual aerial photograph of the maze.  If you, or someone you know is able to fly or has access to a plane, please contact us!!!
